BASKETBALL FAQs

How long is the season?

Our season runs October through mid-March. Tryouts are in September.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts for this season will be held during the first two weeks of September. Independent evaluators come in for two evenings to grade the players. All of our information is on our website www.jgtba.org

How often do they practice?

Twice a week, but not on Wednesdays as this is open for religion classes.

How many games do they play?

Tournaments are on weekends usually Saturdays and Sundays (an occasional Friday). The girls can play anywhere from 2-4 games at a given tournament.

Where are the tournaments played?

In the metro area, they can be from Maple Grove to Woodbury or as close as Eden Prairie to Edina. Tournaments will be determined after tryouts. Teams play approximately 9 tournaments.

What are the costs per player?

Typically, for a roster of eight players and playing eight tournaments for the season the cost per player would be approximately $350.00.

What if my daughter has a school function to attend or a big test to study for?

JGTBA understands that school comes first and as long as the school request is communicated to the coaches this would be an excused absence.

What if there is a family function to attend?

Again, if this is communicated to the coaches this is an excused absence.

Is there a year end tournament?

Yes, MYAS runs a Grade State Tournament. This is held the 1st or 2nd full weekend in March.

What responsibilities do I have as a parent?

Other than getting your daughter to games and practices, the main obligation is working at our Bloomington Jefferson tournament. The shifts are usually 3 to 4 hours.

Volunteers are what make JGTBA a success!

CONCUSSION INFORMATION

Concussion Certification Required for ALL Coaches & Officials

The Minnesota Legislature recently passed a “Concussion Law’’ which requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statute’s requirements, including implementing concussion training and education to improve player safety and establish safe return-to-play policies for athletes who sustain a concussion.

The law mandates that:

All coaches (head and assistants) and officials receive concussion training and education by Sept. 1, 2011, and then at three-year intervals thereafter.

Coaches must remove an athlete from activity if they exhibit signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion and/or are suspected of sustaining a concussion.

The law also requires a doctor’s signature to return to play if an athlete is removed due to a concussion or is showing signs or symptoms of a concussion.

The Concussion Education we recommend for coaches and officials is the online video training session developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Federation of State High Schools. This course requires registration but is free of charge. More than 200,00 coaches and officials have already successfully completed this course. The training process involves watching a video and then successfully completing a quiz. The entire training module can be completed in a little more than 30 minutes and then participants can print a certificate on their desktop or print and scan the certificate to create a digital file.
